We aim to provide a Catholic ethos where children can learn about their immediate environment and the wider world in which they are going to live. Emphasis is place on developing social skills, as well as reading and number skills, as the basis for wider study of science, technology and the environment. Creative work is actively encouraged across the spectrum of subjects. Opportunities are included for physical and artistic development both within the daily curriculum and via participation in club activities. Each class has its own bank of computers connected to the computer suite.
Curriculum 2000 is fully in place for all subjects, supported by planning documents issued by the DCSF. Teachers expectations of pupils are high and every child is required to work to the best of their ability. We ensure the new Primary National Strategy is implemented and used throughout all key stages, supporting Literacy and Numeracy planning and assessment.
In addition, the school places great emphasis on Citizenship and Personal, Social and Health Education – this non-statutory subject is taught across all age groups. The school also has a school council where children help make decisions on a whole range of issues as we believe this encourages responsibility.
We are committed to providing our children with a broad and balanced curriculum. In recent years this has been enhanced by violin, woodwind and brass lessons, French, craft club, bell ringing, recorders, games club, netball, rounders and football. In particular, our provision for P.E. both within the curriculum and after school, has grown tremendously due to St. Mary’s Menston now having Sport’s College status. This enables additional finance and expertise to be given to us as a feeder school.
